If your bird has been eating a seed-only diet, you may have already heard from a vet or fellow bird owner that pellets are generally the healthier long-term choice. Seeds are often high in fat and lack many of the vitamins and minerals birds need to thrive. Pellets, on the other hand, are formulated to provide complete, balanced nutrition in every bite.
The challenge? Getting your bird to agree.
Birds are creatures of habit, and many will initially refuse anything that doesn’t look or smell like what they’ve always eaten. But with patience and the right approach, most birds can successfully make the transition. Here’s how we recommend doing it at Mishkatmann Pet Shop.
Start Gradually, Not Abruptly
Never remove seeds entirely and replace them with pellets overnight. This can cause severe stress and, in some cases, a bird may refuse to eat the new food entirely and go dangerously long without nutrition. Instead, begin by mixing a small amount of pellets in with their regular seed mix — roughly 25% pellets to 75% seeds. Let your bird explore the new texture and smell at their own pace.
Increase the Ratio Over Time
Over the course of two to four weeks, slowly shift the ratio. Move from 25/75 to 50/50, then to 75/25, and eventually to a pellet-primary diet. Monitor your bird’s droppings and weight throughout this process. A healthy bird in transition will maintain normal droppings and stay active. If you notice lethargy or significant weight loss, slow down the transition and consult your avian vet.
Make Pellets Appealing
Some birds are won over faster when pellets are introduced in a playful or varied way. Try moistening the pellets slightly to enhance the aroma. Offer them from your hand rather than the bowl at first — many birds associate hand-offered food with treats. You can also try crushing pellets and mixing them with a small amount of fruit or vegetable the bird already enjoys.
Stay Consistent
The most important thing is not to give up. Birds can be stubborn, and some take longer than others. If your bird seems to hold out, try different pellet brands or flavours — some birds prefer coloured pellets, others prefer plain. Keep offering, stay calm, and avoid showing frustration. Birds are perceptive and respond to your energy.
What About Treats and Fresh Food?
A pellet-based diet doesn’t mean a monotonous one. Fresh vegetables, leafy greens, and small amounts of fruit are excellent additions to a pellet diet and provide natural enrichment. Seeds can still be offered occasionally as treats rather than staples.
